For those who want more information, this page is a catch-all!
Clients and fit: I work with people who want to deepen their relationships, explore their personal trauma, and who are looking for a non-directive, actively empathetic, curious and insightful therapist. You can expect to be challenged toward greater self-compassion and contextual understanding of your life. I work best with those who are motivated toward transformation and healing. I don’t often offer homework, but instead present somatic (body-based) practices, and open exploration around attachment styles, family of origin, conflict models, and emotions/thoughts relating to meaning and existence. My deepest hope for you, as a potential client, is that if we connect, you will find therapy to be a space where you are accurately/empathically seen, and can grow in self-compassion.
Session Duration and Counseling Relationship: For individual clients, sessions are 53 minutes, for couples/families, sessions are 60 minutes. Our sessions can be weekly, or every other week (bi-weekly). When asked how long someone will be in therapy, my answer is “as long as it is helpful.” I have several long-term clients, and enjoy doing depth-work which often requires weekly sessions and a progression in the deepening of the relationship. Some folks come to address a crisis or urgent/acute need and choose to finish therapy when things are calmer. We can always discuss what fits your schedule/timeline, and my style of work/availability.
My passions and interests: I am passionate about music, about justice, about community, and about recognizing, naming and exploring (and ultimately dismantling) systems of power. I spend a LOT of my time reading around: intersectionality, prison/incarceration abolition, racism, feminism, attachment, sexism, fighting white supremacy, religious/spiritual trauma, adoption trauma, neuroscience, and devouring memoirs from folks with diverse backgrounds.
Couples or Family Counseling: I have worked with pairs of siblings, with married and unmarried couples, and with family members (parent-child, etc.). When it comes to this area of counseling, I try to explore family of origin and attachment styles, desired relational/emotional experience (how do participants in the relationship want to feel, what would success look/feel like), and focus on recognizing strengths and areas for growth. Some books I recommend around this are: Attached by Amir Levine and Rachel S. F. Heller, Non-Violent Communication by Marshall Rosenberg, No More Mediocre by Laura Danger, and Family Ties that Bind by Dr. Ronald W. Richardson.
Logistics and Billing: I exclusively offer virtual/video teletherapy currently. I use a HIPAA-protected system called Simple Practice as my main platform for video session links, and for our intake paperwork. If you are a private pay (no insurance) client, once I get your information from Simple Practice, I will enter you into a HIPAA-protected platform called IvyPay, and they will send you a text to put a payment card on file and I will charge this at the end of each of our sessions to collect the fee. If your insurance carrier is one of the ones I accept on Headway, Headway is where I will keep session notes and Headway will bill you for my fee. I will still use Simple Practice to collect the initial paperwork and to send telehealth links.
